"U.S.-China competition is on the same starting line," Chipuller chairman Yang Meng said about chiplet technology in an interview with Reuters. "AMD results were more vulnerable than Intel's because most AMD-based PC customers were consumers. In contrast, Intel had a significant share in the business PC segment," said Mikako Kitagawa, analyst at research firm Gartner. "The results reflect a weaker consumer PC segment than the business PC segment." Order cuts by networking equipment makers have also cast a shadow over demand for products by Xilinx, the data center and networking chip company AMD acquired last year. Data center segment revenue was flat at $1.30 billion during the quarter.

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. reported Tuesday a 98% decline in net income for the fourth quarter as operating expenses more than doubled and sales linked to its PC clients were cut in half. The Santa Clara, Calif.-based chip maker, whose central processing units are used to build videogame consoles and gaming PCs, said net income for the period fell to $21 million, or 1 cent a share, from $974 million, or 80 cents a share, for the same period a year earlier. The company said the decline was mostly linked to its acquisition of semiconductor company Xilinx Inc.

"AMD remained resilient and even made gains in their datacenter chips...against Intel," said Wayne Lam analyst at CCS Insight. Chief Executive Lisa Su said she was confident AMD will keep gaining market share this year and that the second half would be stronger than the first. "First quarter should be the bottom for us in PCs and then grow from there into the second quarter and then into the second half," Su said on the earnings call. The chip is called the Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC and was developed by Xilinx, which was acquired by AMD this year. This will allow automakers to update not only software, but also the chip, after the car is sold, Rehan Tahir, AMD’s senior product marketing manager for automotive told Reuters. Tahir said the Aisin auto parking system will start production on 2024 models, but declined to say which car brands would use it. Tahir said the Aisin system works with four cameras and 12 ultrasonic sensors on the car to parallel park and also back into parking spaces. But the human in the car will have to decide if that spot is in a no-parking zone, he said.

AMD forecast fourth-quarter and full-year revenue below Wall Street estimates, but Kinngai Chan, an analyst at Summit Insights Group, suggested investors had braced for worse. "While AMD's 4Q22 sales outlook was below consensus expectations, we believe investors are somewhat relieved that AMD expects its data center and embedded businesses to grow sequentially," Chan said. While AMD has been growing its market share quickly in the datacenter, rival Intel Corp.(INTC.O) has seen its share slip even in its latest earnings reported. Su added the North American cloud market was the most resilient of the data center market segments, though she did not expect significant recovery of the China data center market in 2023. While its Data Center revenue was $1.6 billion, up 45% year-on-year.

Global shipments of desktop and laptop computers fell in the third quarter by a record 18% on a year-over-year basis to a total of 69.4 million units, according to market research firm Canalys. International Data Corp., a technology industry research firm, reported similar declines in third-quarter consumer PC sales. The firm is expected to report commercial PC sales next week, said IDC research manager Jitesh Ubrani. On Monday, Gartner said laptop demand among large enterprises fell sharply in the third quarter, while overall global PC sales saw their steepest decline in over two decades, Gartner said. In the third quarter, worldwide shipments of personal computers dropped 19.5% from a year ago, Gartner reported.

Chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices Inc on Thursday provided third-quarter revenue estimates that were about a billion dollars less than previously forecast, signaling the chip slump could be much worse than expected. AMD shares dropped 4% in after hours trading, dragging down shares of Nvidia Corp and Intel Corp by over 2%. The company said it expects third-quarter revenue of about $5.6 billion. AMD is the latest chipmaker to be hit by the sector’s slump. Nvidia Corp and Intel Corp both delivered much worse than expected earnings in their latest reports.
